Legacy™ 100% Polyester Batting - Thermal Bonded

Legacy™ by Pellon® 100% Polyester Batting is thermal bonded to prevent bearding [aka fiber migration to the surface] and will not shrink. However, should you use hot temperatures while washing and drying a quilt or garment, the fabrics used could shrink 0-2% if they are not shrunk prior to use. Excessive laundering can create bearding.

Polyester does not breathe like many natural fibers and therefore makes a very warm bed covering as it traps body warmth. It provides a good deal of loft promoting definition in quilting stitches whether by hand or machine. Poly is extremely easy to hand quilt. The ‘puff’ or loft is often used in the Trapunto technique, where an additional section of batting is placed underneath an area and then quilted for added dimension.

What is Thermal Bonding?

Thermal bonding is a process in which fibers are tossed in a large container and mixed with a very small percentage of ‘low-melt’ polyester. Once this is tumbled together, it is laid out onto a conveyor belt and passed through an oven. The poly fibers melt, surrounding the wool or polyester fibers. This is then passed through heated rollers that seal and compress the fibers to the desired height. The majority of ‘low-melt’ polyester is dissipated in the process leaving a minute amount remaining. Thermal bonding provides a very soft and airy result.
