90" wide, 20 Yard Roll. Wool batting, although expensive, offers many of the same qualities as cotton batting. It is soft, drapable, and when intricately quilted, gives a beautiful textural dimension to the quilt. Wool batting offers natural warmth with relatively little weight. For ease in handling and reduction in fiber migration, most wool batting is finished with a cheesecloth or lightweight fabric cover. Wool batting is produced from long virgin-wool fibers. First the wool is scoured to remove the dirt and yolk (natural oils). Then it is moth-proofed by impregnating the fibers with chemicals that resist moth larvae. The wool is then carded, where the fibers are opened, mixed and finally formed into an even blanket. Like cotton, the natural felting property of the wool fibers helps to hold the batting together.

Hobbs has combined a unique resin bonding process with magnificent washable wool to produce what we believe is the finest wool batting in the world. Wool breathes better than other fibers and acts as a natural insulator, helping to maintain comfort summer or winter. Wool is exceptionally easy to quilt by hand or machine and can be quilted up to 4" apart. Quilts made with this premium batting can be washed by machine (gentle cycle) or by hand. This batting has been endorsed and developed by Harriet Hargrave.

What is Resin Bonded?
Resin bonded batting is made made from a wide variety of fibers including polyester, cotton, wool, etc. A web is garnetted or carded then passed through a process that applies a resin to both sides. The web is dried and cured to form a bonded batting. This bonded batting resists bearding better than any other type of batting. There are many different types of fiber and resin combinations to give a desired “look” and “hand”. Combining processes, fibers and resins makes the resin bonded process the most versatile and most effective way to produce battings.

Hobbs Heirloom® Organic cotton batting with scrim binder is needle punched cotton batting with a thin polypropylene binder. They use the same pure organic cotton which is grown without pesticides or other chemicals as they do in all their organic cotton products, thus assuring the quilter that the batting is free of all chemicals which could cause an allergic reaction. The scrim binder provides additional strength which enables the product to be quilted up to 8-10 inches apart, or can be used as the outside layer for craft projects. This batting is primarily for machine quilters and crafts.
What does Needle Punched mean?
This type of batting is carded or garnetted then layered to form a web. The web is then passed through needling equipment that mechanically entangles the web by using thousands of needles that lock the fiber together. This type of product works to give strength to a product while allowing for a soft hand and thinner profile vs. a high loft type product. Needle punched wool or polyester tend to migrate, but will not bunch or shift like plain garnetted or carded products. Needle punched products can be thermal bonded or resin bonded.
What is scrim?
Scrim is a thin stabilizer that is needle punched into the batting to provide strength and prevent stretching
