Hobbs Heirloom® Fusible is an iron on batting which is fusible on both sides. Their Fusible 80/20 is made the same way as their Premium 80/20, except they use a fusible resin in the spray bonding process. This resin eliminates the need for pinning or basting, saving quilters’ time and effort. Simply press your quilt from the center to the outer edges. Make sure you keep your iron moving, pressing approximately 3-4 seconds in each area. Once you have covered the entire surface area of your quilt, allow the quilt to cool. You may then begin quilting by hand or machine. Shrinkage of 3-5% and may be quilted up to 4” apart.

  • Queen Size: 96" x 30 Yards
  • Needle Punched & Resin Bonded, 80/20 Cotton Blend
  • Color: Natural
  • Stitches up to 4″ apart
  • 1/8″ loft, 3-5% shrinkage

--

How do I use Heirloom® Fusible batting?

Directions: Layer your quilt top, batting and backing. To fuse all three layers of your quilt at once, set your iron on a wool or cotton setting with steam. Simply press your quilt from the center to the outer edges. Be sure you keep your iron moving, pressing approximately 2-3 seconds in each area. This is only a temporary fuse. If you make a mistake or have a crease just simply lift the fabric and reapply the iron to fuse again. Once you have covered the entire surface area of your quilt, allow the quilt to cool. You may then begin quilting. You can fuse one side at a time but need to be careful because the exposed side of the batting will fuse to whatever it is touching.

What does Needle Punched mean?

This type of batting is carded or garnetted then layered to form a web. The web is then passed through needling equipment that mechanically entangles the web by using thousands of needles that lock the fiber together. This type of product works to give strength to a product while allowing for a soft hand and thinner profile vs. a high loft type product. Needle punched wool or polyester tend to migrate, but will not bunch or shift like plain garnetted or carded products. Needle punched products can be thermal bonded or resin bonded.

What is Resin Bonded?

Resin bonded batting is made made from a wide variety of fibers including polyester, cotton, wool, etc. A web is garnetted or carded then passed through a process that applies a resin to both sides. The web is dried and cured to form a bonded batting. This bonded batting resists bearding better than any other type of batting. There are many different types of fiber and resin combinations to give a desired “look” and “hand”. Combining processes, fibers and resins makes the resin bonded process the most versatile and most effective way to produce battings.

Legacy™ by Pellon® 100% Natural Cotton Batting s intended for all tones except for white and very light colored quilts. The cream color could show through a very light fabric and also the natural by products of cotton could bleed onto a white fabric leaving a brown stain.

Legacy™ 100% Cotton allows stitched areas up to 4”. It has a low loft and is best used in machine work. For hand sewing use the 100% cotton with no scrim binder added. Cotton is a natural and renewable, sustainable fiber that has been used in quilts for centuries. The cotton fiber is strong and yet soft and has proven itself to last. Quilts are not destined for a landfill, yet quilters are conscious of the environment and are making choices to ‘do no harm’ to the earth. The growth and processing of all natural cotton does not harm the environment. It is needle punched and there are no chemicals used.  Pellon's cotton is grown and their products are proudly manufactured in the USA.

Cotton does not beard [aka fiber migration to the surface]. ALL cottons can shrink up to 3-5%. Should you use hot temperatures while washing and/or drying a quilt or garment, the fabrics used could shrink 3% if they are not shrunk prior to use. When gentle cycles and cool temperatures are used in washing, a finished quilt or garment made with this 100% cotton batting will be surprisingly durable. Air dry or dry laying flat for best results.

  • Needlepunched, 100% Cotton (NO SCRIM)
